The Black Gold name was originally founded as a Drum Corps in 1985 by Tim Petro out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The corps took the field in competition for the first time in 1987 and continued to compete through 1993.  During that time they achieved finishes as high as 23rd overall and took honors such as high visual, high percussion, and best color guard.

During the mid 90s, Black Gold also fielded a Winter Percussion Ensemble who placed 8th in their competitive class.

The Black Gold name now lives on as Winter Guard.  While Oklahoma will always be home in our hearts, the decision was made in the early aughts to move home base to Dallas, Texas.  The Black Gold Winter Guard has strong history as a world finalist multiple years in all classes of competition and have won honors such as the WGI Fan’s Favorite Award.  The guard continues to grow and shape the activity and the lives of all youth who continue to call Black Gold home.
